Facts Behind Folklore and Urban Legends

This starting point becomes transformed through the storytelling process into the familiar tales we hear from parents, fairy tale books, around the campfire, or that meme that just KEEPS getting reposted. How can we dig into these stories to find their center? How can we use that knowledge to craft stories that take on a life of their own?
